10 years mutual cooperation CRAC and KCC

Cedar Rapids Animal Control (CRAC) have been partnering with Kirkwood Community College (KCC) since 2006. The commitment to cooperate is getting stronger when both organizations teamed up during the flood in 2008.

“The emergency shelter was set up here in the Kirkwood Campus, in the equestrian center, during that whole six week periods we were working very closely together,” said Program Manager of CRAC Diane Webber.

Currently the cooperation of both organizations is getting wider. It covers inside and outside campus program. CRAC closely works with v-tech program, the grooming program and human officer training program. A work study student from Kirkwood is also run in CRAC. Meanwhile outside program includes human education programs at school.

“We do a lot of community outstretch, human education program that is another area that Kirkwood call on us for help students learning program out in the different community schools,” said Webber. Recently CRAC and KCC went to Excelsior Middle School in Marion for career days. 

CRAC also provides animal control enforcement and shelter for animal in Cedar Rapids and Marion. The need is increasing each year as the community grows. Webber stated the mutual relationship between CRAC and KCC has benefited animal at the health care and KCC students’ learning.

“We handle about 3,000 animals a year that coming here either through being picked up on the street or people have surrender pet because for whatever reason they can’t keep them any longer but if they come to us as a stray, a lot of those owners come and reclaim them which is what we want, we want them to go home,” added Webber.

Besides working on program various program in Kirkwood, CRAC also runs independent program such as adoption, emergency responses, rabies and microchip clinics, community outstretch, fundraising and enforcement of animal control regulation. 

CRAC is located in Kirkwood Community College area, 900 76th Ave Drive SW, Cedar Rapids. It opens 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
