Presidential candidates share views on higher education

As the political primary has progressed and presidential candidate republican front runners Ted Cruz and Donald Trump and democratic front runners Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders take a stand on the issue of higher education.

In an interview with TheHill.com, Trump slammed the federal government for profiting off federal student loans. “That’s probably one of the only things the government shouldn’t make money off,” he said.

Both Trump and Cruz have expressed empathy toward students with astronomical college debt. Though Cruz has shown support for laws and amendments that “shift loans from private banks to federal direct lending and greatly expanded Pell grants,” according to Credible.com, he has maintained party line on the subject.

Sanders and Clinton have also addressed the subject of college education and student loans. Sanders has repeatedly proposed making college education 100 percent free. According to his website, Sanders said, “It is insane and counter-productive…that hundreds of thousands of bright young people cannot afford to go to college.”

Clinton said she still believes “student loans are one of the biggest problems we have right now in our country,” according to Credible.com. She also stated  a “comprehensive, multifaceted approach” is needed to deal with American students’ current debt and she has advocated for loan refinancing.

Each candidate has their ideas about how to approach college education. For more information about where the current presidential candidates stand on issues, visit their websites.
