Kirkwood Community College offers students the chance to earn extra money on campus by applying for a work study position, available not only for this semester but for the upcoming fall semester as well.

Kirkwood provides a multitude of different work study jobs, giving students the ability to find one best suited for their interests as well as their majors. Jobs can range anywhere from a desk job in the Admissions office to working with cattle in the Agriculture department.

Brenda Schaffer, director of the work study program, said she has had this position for about three years and that over the years  things have change. She mentioned how important it is to make connections as a student and getting a job in the work study program helps get a foot in the door to make those contacts that will help down the road in future careers.

She said, “Definitely getting those contacts, they carry through with you. And, getting those references so when you leave here, you can ask for a reference later down the road.”

Schaffer also pointed out the minimum hours that work study requires, giving students a little extra money in their pocket while working flexible, convenient hours to fit a busy schedule.

Cassandra Brower, second year student at Kirkwood, said she has been working as an office assistant for the Dean of Students office since last August. Brower said, “The most challenging part of my job is that it’s really confidential because I know I’m not allowed to talk about it with other people.”

Throughout working as an office assistant, she said she has developed a stronger relationship with the advisers and her co-workers. According to Schaffer, work study offers great opportunities for students to get involved throughout campus, and teaches them news skills as well as providing them the chance to gather more references for future endeavors.

There are no special requirements for a job in the work study program, with the only restriction being that students must use Financial Aid.

Schaffer said, “I think it’s definitely something students should look into, it’s really a rewarding thing to do.”
