Softball claws its way to the top

The Kirkwood softball team had a very productive week to say the least.  The  NJCAA scheduling committee supplied a gauntlet of talent for the Eagles, having to face double headers between North Iowa Area Community College Wednesday April 6th followed by two games on Saturday April 9th at the rival and 5th ranked Des Moines Area Community College, only to have to wrap up against the talented
Iowa Central Community College team on the road as well.

The Eagles raised there finger to the competition and proved to be outstanding at each phase.

Against NIACC, the Eagles fell behind four to nothing in the first game. After a weather delay for lightening and heavy rain, the team fired back to protect their home turf. They outscored NIACC 15 to three in the final two innings to win 15 to seven in the first game.  The second game was not much to be desired as the bats kept pounding away at their opponent’s pitcher tearing down NIACC 10 to two in the second game.

Eagles took to the road for the weekend with the first stop at the dreaded DMACC field on Saturday April ninth.  The first game was a thriller with the Eagles coming up in the last at bat down by two runs.  The ladies got a runner on base and then a two run home run tied the game.  It took nine innings for the Eagles to wrestle the game away from the Bears of DMACC, but that is what they did winning the first game 11 to nine.

The second game was still a shoot out with runs being scored, but DMACC could not keep up with the Kirkwood, and the Eagles beat down DMACC 12 to six in the second game.

There was no time to celebrate after the outstanding sweep in Boone, as there was still the trip to Fort Dodge to meet ICCC on Sunday April 10th.

The first game of this match up was again very hard fought as the Eagles won the game holding off ICCC six to five.

The second game the offensive juggernaut that is Kirkwood showed up in force downing their foe in just five innings by the score of 19 to one.

Six tough conference games in just five days is an extremely tough road to hoe for any team, but for the Eagles their dominance in sweeping all six games is nothing short of spectacular, and could be the type of performance that drives them to continued excellence for the rest of their season.

The Eagles have improved their overall record to 37 wins against 4 losses, while running their conference leading mark to 15 wins and just a single loss.
