The Kirkwood Community College golf team just came off three impressive invites culminated by the Regional Preview Tournament April 17 and 18 at Lake Panorama Golf Course.  The Eagles destroyed the field of would be contenders and won impressively over second place Waldorf College by 24 strokes.

The most impressive feat was on the second day of the tournament on a track that is long and extremely challenging. In the teeth of rain and wind, the Eagles put up a team score of 289.

Waldorf College was second with a daily team score of 311.  This is how the Kirkwood team propelled itself to the top of the class.  This was part of the reason the Eagle linksters have moved to be rated sixth in the nation, according to the NJCAA ranking system.

The Eagles have been talked about as conference champs, national rankings perhaps top five before the national tournament, players going low on tough courses, dominating wins and on and on.

Kirkwood attended the invite from North Iowa Area Community College at the Mason City Country Club April 21.  It included the same field as was invited to Panora four days earlier and on a much shorter and more accessible course as that of Lake Panorama. So it would have seemed farfetched to believe that anyone but the Eagles would come out on top.

Not so fast.  There is a saying in this sport that has stood for over 75 years, “That’s just golf.”  The definition behind this saying is to understand circumstances that are unexplainable.  That would sum up the performance of the Eagles on this day.

Four of the top five golfers seemed to be in great shape after nine holes with Carson Whittingham, Jordan Even, Charlie Hartwig, and Eddie Doyle either under par or within a shot of par.  The last nine holes proved to invoke “That’s just golf” as the team collapsed down the stretch.

The team finished with scores of 75,77,77,77 and 78 using the top four scores from the Kirkwood team they scored a poultry 301.  Just four days earlier the team had the number one, two and three finishers individually and also added a fifth place contribution.  On this day not one member of the team finished in the top five and the team lost by 17 strokes to conference foe Iowa Lakes Community College.

The Eagles will go to the regional tournament on May 7 - 8.
