Nearad chases triple crown

The Kirkwood Community College softball team is on an incredible terror racking up 16 straight wins as they are steam rolling the conference with runaway abandon.  The lady Eagles currently have a 45-4 overall record and a 23-1 conference record.

The Eagles are three games ahead of their nearest rival in the conference and continue to pile on overwhelming win after win heading down the stretch of their season.

Kirkwood has had many bright spots thus far to the season but one of the most amazing individual stories to watch is that of Taylor Nearad, who is on pace to win the national triple crown.  This feat is extremely difficult and is a very rare accomplishment.  There are awards for highest batting average, most homeruns, and RBIs.  To win one of these categories is outstanding, but to win each one is near impossible.

Nearad is hitting .624 with 21 homeruns and has 94 RBI according to official NJCAA official statistics.  That puts Nearad at the top or very near in each of the triple crown categories.

If the Eagles team wasn’t enough to watch going down the stretch of the season Nearad’s numbers will be.

Kirkwood’s last four games were won by the Eagles two-game sweep over Southwestern Community College, 16-8 and 9-1, with Nearad going four for five with five RBIs with Lexi Ferrari and Emily Meyer each adding two to lead the team.

Game two Nearad was three for three at the dish and led the team with four plated runs, two scoring and two driven in, while Meyer led the team with three RBIs.

The Eagles then traveled to North Iowa Area Community College to face one of the other top contenders for the conference and seemed to have little trouble dispatching of the Trojans in a sweep of the two games played.

In game one the Eagles won 10-5 with contributions up and down the line up showing just how deep and versatile the team has become this season.

Game two was an utter blowout, 11-0, that lasted only five innings.

The Eagles will be on their final stretch of the season over the next week playing two games against Northeaster CC Iowa Central CC and a battle with the high powered Indian Hills squad before entering regional play  April 29.
