Acceptance important during times of change

LGBT, which stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, was the original name for groups looking to expand the rights for gays everywhere. The term is consistently evolving and adapting to include new members but change and acceptance can be difficult for some.

The world today is consistently changing and adapting to the people that are looking for a more progressive society.

People tend to draw a line in the sand in which to say this is final and society doesn’t need to evolve any further. This becomes more apparent with the recent surge of people calling out people’s political correctness.

People are looking for new ways to define themselves and exhibit some new factor to differentiate each other.

According to Gary H. Cooper on, “ membership for lesbians, gay men and bisexual women and men is defined by their sexual orientation, whereas transgendered individuals’ group membership is defined by their gender identity and gender nonconformity. Although the life experiences of these groups of people can vary tremendously, psychologists and other professionals from related disciplines often group them together under the acronym LGBT to represent a group of people who experience oppression and marginalization based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, and who do not share the same basic civil rights as other citizens in many societies.”

Inside the groups created to support the LGBT community, many choose to broaden the terms. Q has recently been added to the end of LGBT to support Queer, which is an overall term to define the broad range of homosexuality.  And, A has been added as well to include asexuality.

Instead of putting people into categories, students need to be looking for ways to include everyone and accept that people are vastly different.

Kirkwood Community College promotes an environment of acceptance and students should follow without labeling individuals based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
