Fall honors project deadline approaching

Students at Kirkwood Community College who would like to create a project on a topic of personal interest, under the advisement of a faculty member, may apply for an Honors Project.

Students can choose a project based on Phi Theta Kappa honors topics or on an alternative study topic, according to Honors Program Chair Dr. Peter Jauhiainen.

Students should know that although they do need to meet certain academic criteria and apply to participate in an honors project, they do not need to be members of Phi Theta Kappa, said Jauhiainen.

He added, “The key thing is, I tell students, ‘Pick something you are interested in, something you want to explore.’”

Jauhiainen stated completing an honors project comes with many benefits. Just a portion of those benefits include being able to showcase talent, competing against other projects, the possibility of winning cash prizes and the opportunity to apply for scholarships.

Jauhiainen also mentioned that some other great benefits include resume building and making personal contacts.

Students have the opportunity to work on an honors project during either the fall or spring semester. “When a student completes a project they are able to follow up on the project and create something that stems from their original idea during the following semester,” he said.

Jauhiainen said students are expected to spend about 45 hours on their project.  He added that students meeting the eligibility requirements will be receiving a letter this week with more information.

The eligibility criteria, along with a list of honors topics, honors faculty members, benefits of completing a project, and Frequently Asked Questions are listed on the website,

The deadline to apply is Sept. 23. Students can e-mail general questions about the honors program to
