When deciding where to go to college, many students might not consider campus safety a top priority.

Students often say they chose Kirkwood Community College for the cost and claim that tuition is more affordable. Other students say because they weren’t sure what they wanted to do yet, they came here to get a general education first.

Today, it seems more common to hear about deadly school shootings, bomb threats and other dangerous situations that threaten the safety of students and those who work in the college environment.

Kirkwood has a reputation for offering a safe environment that welcomes students. Some students say it is the environment provided, while others say it is the amount of activities on campus.

The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 has done a lot to advance goals of security on many campuses throughout the U.S.

In line with The CACSA, The Department of Education has just recently released a new Handbook for Campus Safety and Security Reporting to provide students, along with faculty and staff step-by-step procedures for security issues.

When compared to other colleges of similar size, Kirkwood has a relatively low crime rate. According to the U.S. Department of Education Campus Safety and Security website, recent KCC campus crimes include three burglaries in 2012, two burglaries in 2013 and one reported incident of a forcible sex offense in 2013. reported 7,453 burglaries on U.S. college campuses and 2,275 sex offenses in 2013.

According to the Kirkwood website, “Kirkwood Campus Security Officers patrol the campus, respond to emergencies and other calls for service, conduct traffic checks on campus, walk through the campus buildings, staff special events, and facilitate a variety of safety and security presentations.”

So whatever the reason may be for attending Kirkwood, knowing safety is a priority allows students to feel better while attending clases on campus.
