For the first time in school history, Kirkwood Community College will host its own Dance Marathon in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

According to, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are dedicated to raising funds and awareness that benefit UI Children’s Hospital patients and their families. The site also stated funds raised “stay at UI Children’s Hospital to be invested in new pediatric research and treatments, state-of-the-art equipment sized just right for kids, enhancements for the hospital stay to make a home-like atmosphere and educational materials to help patient families.”

Student Life and Housing Coordinator Shelby Crist stated, “Dance Marathon is an organization that raises money for Children’s Miracle Network and all year students do different fundraisers, help raise money, do different events that help raise money for the cause.”

She added, “It’s a really great way for students to get together; to meet new people and have fun while they’re making a difference in the lives of sick children.”

Students interesting in participating can sign up at the Student Life and Housing office in Iowa Hall. “If you want to be someone that is super involved and makes this a big priority, they can go above and beyond with fundraising,” Crist stated. “If you’re a type of student that’s busy already, you can get involved enough to participate.”

Kirkwood’s Dance Marathon is Feb. 17 from 6 p.m. until midnight. Students do not have to dance to take part in the event. The main goal is to raise money to benefit CMN, said Crist.

Tyler Carlson, a KCC student on the Dance Marathon Leadership Team said, “The fact that we can come together as a college and promote the cause to help save the kids is a great opportunity.”
