Volleyball 'kills' the competition

The Kirkwood Community College women’s volleyball team kicked off the first month with a record of 20-6. Kirkwood played the North Iowa Area Community College Trojans on Sept. 21. 

The game lasted three sets, all ending in a Kirkwood victory. The scores were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16, respectively. KCC’s Madsy Richards, no. 7, got the most kills with 12, contributing to the total of 75 points they made, while Alex Miner,  no. 10, had the highest kill percentage with .417. 

At the home game, Kirkwood players ore neon green hair ties, matching attendees supporting Kirkwood Dance Marathon. A win was earned for the team as well as many donations for the Dance Marathon group.

The Kirkwood volleyball team traveled to Champaign, Ill., and won against Vincennes University (3-0) and Lincoln Land Community College (3-0) on Sept. 23, while losing to Muskegon Community College (3-2) and Owens Community College (3-0) the following day. 

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the Eagles were back at home and beat Southeastern Community College (3-0).

The team then headed to the Johnson County Tournament in Kansas on Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1. The first day they swept Johnson County Community College (3-0). 

Alex Miner had 11 kills and Morgan Grimm had nine. Caiti Peterson contributed 38 assists, Jenna Laxton had 19 digs and Erica Armstrong blocked five shots. 

Later that day, however, they Eagles lost to Iowa Western Community College (3-0). 

According to,, “Richards had 12 more kills against Iowa Western. Peterson had 26 assists, Laxton had 17 digs and Miner blocked four shots.”

The second day they came back and lost against Central Community College-Columbus (3-0) while ending the tournament with a win against North Platte Community College (3-0).

  The 2-2 game split left them with an overall record of 20-6. 

Upcoming Eagles volleyball games include the two-day Des Moines Area Community College tournament on Oct. 7 and 8 and a home game on Wednesday, Oct. 25, against  Indian Hills Community College.
