Vegetarian and Vegan lifestyles have many choices

Becoming a vegetarian or vegan is a very personal choice. While some do it for health benefits, others do it out of a passion for animals. Whatever the case may be, there is a lot to learn from people who choose to plan their meals around the avoidance of meat or other animal products.

“It made me feel really healthy,” said Nicole Jones, an Occupational Therapist Assistant major at Kirkwood Community College who has tried both vegan and vegetarian diets in the past. “What is nice about being a vegetarian or vegan is that they have many options at the grocery store and you can still eat things like cookies and ice cream,” she said.

Jones enjoyed her time on both diets, but eventually switched back to her previous diet due to a consistent ill feeling. “I discovered that kind of diet is just not for everyone,” she said. Many people who avoid animal products often return to their old ways after a period of time with “84% of vegetarians and vegans eventually returning to meat”, according to an article by Psychology Today.

Many Kirkwood students have considered becoming a vegetarian or vegan before, but have felt that the process of switching over to a new diet may bring difficulty or confusion. “I have honestly considered going vegetarian before, but I think it would be too hard for me,” said April Korsmo, a Liberal Arts major. “I just love non-vegetarian food too much and don’t have the time to shop for a whole new diet, so props to people who can actually keep up with that,” she said.

There are many resources available to someone who is considering a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle. Cell phone apps such as “Happy Cow” and “Is It Vegan?” can help students find vegan-friendly meals and restaurants quickly. There are also hundreds of websites such as and that can be easily referenced when needed.

A vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is different for everyone who chooses to partake in it. The most important thing to remember when drastically changing a diet is to be careful and consider speaking with a doctor about how to stay healthy.
