KCC Dance Marathon Team holds "For The Kids" event

Kirkwood Dance Marathon, a club of students raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network held their “For The Kids Week” or “FTK” on the main campus of Kirkwood Community College Nov. 7-10. This event included multiple fundraisers and sign up opportunities that spanned throughout the week.

Students walked onto campus Monday morning and saw the chalk-writing on the sidewalks outside of Iowa, Benton, and Linn Halls. The chalk included information about signing up for Dance Marathon and about the different table offerings throughout the week.

On Monday, members of the group held an information table in Cedar Hall, giving out free popcorn and encouraging students to sign up for the club. Pre--order sheets were available for long-sleeved KDM shirts and fanny packs. On Tuesday, a similar table was offered with Dum-Dum lollipops, stationed adjacent to the Cafe. A free-throw contest was also held during the basketball game that night.

On Wednesday, KDM moved to Linn Hall and offered an array of sweets and goodies, including cookies, brownies, puppy chow, and Oreo balls. $90 was brought in through the sale of baked goods on Wednesday. On Thursday afternoon, a second bake sale was held in Cedar Hall to sell the remaining treats.

KDM held a lot of events during this week, but they also went to an event. The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital offered an event for contributors from all the area schools that have their own Dance Marathons teams. A portion of the KDM leadership from Kirkwood was able to tour the hospital and see the state-of-the-art services that they offer. Student Eric Mashek, Leadership Team Member, went to the event and said, “It was so incredible to see the advanced facilities that this high-tech hospital offers…seeing it was way better than hearing about it.” He also added that his favorite part was going to the top floor and looking out on all of Iowa City, specifically Kinnick Stadium.

The goal is to raise $10,000 by February 17th, 2017 for the new Children's Hospital. KDM has reported a total of $7,350 having already been reached. A “Big Event” will be held on February 17th from 6 p.m.-12 a.m., and all members who have raised the minimum of $50 can attend to celebrate the money made.
