Top tech issues @ EagleTech and how to fix them

Technology always seems to fail at the worst times and with the spring semester starting, it’s the perfect time for things to go wrong.

At EagleTech, we’ve seen pretty much every problem there is with both hardware and software. So with that in mind, we want to give you fewer things to worry about by addressing three common problems we hear about and how you can solve them.

1.    Microsoft Office Installation

What many of our readers don’t know is that Kirkwood students get Microsoft Office absolutely free for the duration of your Kirkwood enrollment. And it’s really easy!

All you have to do is go to and scroll down until you see a big, orange banner. Click on that banner and then just follow the step-by-step process. Make sure you use your Kirkwood email ( to log in, and you’re all set.

2.    Talon Problems

Talon is probably the website students will visit the most frequently throughout the semester, so it’s frustrating when you’re unable to log in. Here are some things you can try:

• Make sure you use the same email used in the office install above (, NOT the email with your first and last name (

• Make sure you’re entering your password correctly. If you’re absolutely sure you are, try different variations of that password. If it’s still not working, try any other passwords you use commonly.

• Try clearing your browser’s cookies. Go to your browser settings and view your browsing history. From there, you should see an option to “Clear Browsing Data”. Make sure the option with “Cookies” is checked and click “Clear”. If you have trouble finding out how to do this, feel free to call us at EagleTech or come into the store.

• If none of these options work for you, the next step would be to stop in at the Allsop Computer Lab at the Student Help Desk. It’s located in the bottom floor of Nielsen Hall in room 131.

3.    Viruses and Malware

Unfortunately, viruses are a very common problem — on Windows and Mac computers — and are very easy to accidentally download.

They can cause annoying pop-ups that sometimes ask you to call a number (never call it!), redirect you to malicious websites, and they can even change your search engine in order to track what you’re searching for.

The good news, though, is that they are usually pretty easy to get rid of. The antivirus program we recommend is AVG ( It’s completely free and works just as well as other similar paid alternatives. Other antivirus programs like Malwarebytes are also available, but we recommend consulting either us or the Student Help Desk before installing them.

The start of a new semester can be stressful but following these simple steps can make your technology work for you.

We understand that there are a lot of problems that this article doesn’t cover, so the Techxperts at EagleTech are available to help with any technology challenges.
