The Iowa College Media Association Convention in Des Moines was an incredible experience that took place Feb. 2 – 3. The awards ceremony was held the first night with awards being presented to both the Communiqué and Kirkwood Student Productions. Kirkwood Community College brought home a total of eight awards.

Various workshops were available for students, ranging from topics such as how to use different aspects of technology and social media to panels of young adults who described their experiences as they entered the working world. The most common theme throughout the workshop presentations was how social media and developing technology is changing the way journalists work.

Director of Communications at Brandman University Victoria Lim was the keynote speaker during the awards ceremony. Lim was the first keynote speaker to return to the convention as a presenter for a second time. She was previously Managing Editor of Public Relations and Editorial Content at Walt Disney Resort.

Lim’s presentation was upbeat and inspiring using props to help get her point across. She used stuffed animals in a made up zoo, offering cuddles with the animals for a penny, as a way of showing different story angles.

Lim said, “Competition makes stories better.” It’s easy to think of several newspapers or television stations competing against one another as negative but Lim’s presentation showed how competition does allow journalists to work harder and create more interesting and better quality stories.

Another inspiring speaker was Brian Smith of the Des Moines Register. During a panel entitled, “What I Wish I Would Have Known in College,” he discussed the importance of having a professional social media presence.

Smith mentioned how important it is for students to learn as much as possible while the opportunity to do so is available.

One of the most inspiring comments Smith said was, “Don’t be afraid to just start pushing buttons,” in regard to getting over the fear of learning how to do new tasks. While it may seem a little cliché to some, it was very motivational.

During the awards ceremony, the Communiqué earned the four awards listed below.

• Best News Photograph - 2nd - Jeff Sigmund

• Best Print Design - 2nd - Communiqué Staff

• Best Headline Writing - 2nd - Communiqué Staff

• Best Sports Story - Honorable Mention - Keith Norem
