Popular book section promotes reading for pleasure

For a long time Kirkwood Library Services only bought books that specifically supported classwork but in recent years we’ve started to collect books for recreational, fun reading. This popular book collection has proven to be, well, popular at both library locations.

Back in 2012, the Iowa City library took the lead in creating a pleasure reading collection. In 2014 the Cedar Rapids library received a grant courtesy of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation and were able to use the funds to create a popular books section at the Cedar Rapids campus.

These collections concentrate on popular, mostly YA, fiction along with a small selection of graphic novels shelved in the regular collection. Our goal is to increase student, faculty, and staff pleasure reading. If you’re interested in a book we don’t have, let us know.

The popular book collection in Cedar Rapids is located in the corner just to the left of Circulation. The shelf order is a little different than in other sections of the library.

While most of our books are organized by Dewey call numbers, popular books are shelved in alphabetical order by author’s last name. Popular books are easily recognizable by the yellow PB label above their spine label and the bright red label with the first letter of the author’s last name on the top of the spine.

Please come by, browse the collection and curl up with a good book. Are true books (non-fiction) more your speed? Browse our new book display which is mostly non-fiction. We show off the diversity of our collection from biographies to bigfoot to World War II to resumes to fashion history to movies to cooking inclusive.

A second part of the grant was to establish Little Free Libraries (small libraries in a box where people can take a book or a leave a book not cataloged in our collection). You can find them at the county centers around Kirkwood’s service area. If located at a county center, you can use the library catalog to request books to be delivered to your center.
