There has been a substantial push for more options at restaurants for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free items.

Some people require special diets due to health reasons such as Celiac disease or gluten sensitivities, while others may just prefer a plant-based diet. Onegreenplant.org says, “According to a Harris Interactive study commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, approximately five percent of the U.S. is vegetarian (close to 16 million people) and about half of these vegetarians are vegan.”

Kristin Wheeler, employee at The Café and Liberal Arts student at Kirkwood Community College, said “The Café has really been trying to implement these changes to fit more of a variety of students at Kirkwood.”

She added that The Café has recently unveiled their new options for people with special diets.

UDI’s gluten-free bread is now an option for any sandwich that The Café offers. And, the Curry Chickpea Sandwich, a new vegan option,  will also soon be available. Wheeler said the sandwich is void of any meat or dairy and is in addition to the Vegetarian Sandwich. The Vegetarian Sandwich contains grilled veggies, lettuce, tomato, a choice of bread and cheese.

The Café has a salad bar, which offers a wide variety of fruit and vegetables and it has plans to release a larger array of foods for anyone with special diets, according to Wheeler.

The Café is open Monday - Thursday, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Friday 7 a.m.- 2 p.m. If students have questions about nutrition facts, ingredients or food options, they can contact The Café at 319-398-7189 or the.cafe@kirkwood.edu.
