Brewhemia pours local flavors

In the heart of the NewBo District is Brewhemia, a café and bar.

It is a quaint shop filled with many delicious types of coffee. A variety of different appetizer and sandwich options are available, along with a selection of craft beers made in Iowa. Located at 1202 Third Street SE, it is nearly impossible to miss when driving through NewBo.

The ambiance is spectacular as it has something of an ‘Industrial Chic’ feeling, with faux wood tables and visible piping. After taking in the decor, the smells noticeably coat the area in a rich and hearty coffee aroma, with just a hint of the local beers in the background.

Brewhemia may seem like a bit small for a coffee shop but the open floor plan allows for easy maneuvering and little bumps or brush-ups while enjoying coffee and confections.

The barista recommended a drink called “The Bohemian.” The creamy drink was a mixture of iced coffee, cream and vanilla. It was delicious and went down smooth.

The customer service made the employees feel like family and the shop feel like home. Everyone was nice and talkative and the employees would actually sit down with customers and have a chat.

Brewhemia also has wi-fi available and large windows that let the sun in during the day. Those windows also expose some of the liveliness of NewBo later at night. It is a great place to do homework or gather with friends. describes the shop as, “A café by day featuring amazing coffee, pastries, breakfast and lunch. At night the mood shifts into an intimate place for gathering where you can enjoy craft beer, local spirits, amazing wine, and appetizers.”

As expected, it is a fairly lively restaurant, with most of the tables and chairs being used during their busy hours but it is still a great place to relax as needed.

Anyone who loves great service and great coffee should definitely check out Brewhemia.

The café is open Monday- Thursday 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. – 7p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
