Café of the week

Brewed Awakenings home-like setting

Brewed Awakenings sits on the corner of 1st Avenue and College Dr, across from Coe College. It is a small coffeeshop with a very homely atmosphere. When first walking in, I noticed that the entire cafe looks like it was staged in someone’s well furnished home. There is a mixture of wooden seats, couches, and even a single cushioned reading seat in one corner. Along with these features, there is a soft approachable counter for ordering, and during my visit the two barista’s who were working were both more than amicable.

The menu has a wide selection of snack treats and coffee, along with a list of items classified as “not coffee”. While the service and furniture were excellent, the atmosphere felt a little bit glum. This may be attributed to the less than sunny weather or the time of day, but the entire cafe seemed somewhat darker than it should have been, and in fact some of the lights were not even on. However, where the lighting fell flat, the music choice rose to balance it out. The music was never to loud or too quiet and the tracks were fun without trying to mesh with one specific crowd. The entire area felt like a someone made their home into a coffee shop.

For the first time, this review was not done alone, but instead with two of the other editors for this newspaper. This allowed for more of a variety of tastes. Jay Stewart, for example, bought macchiato and stated “I enjoyed the brightly colored interior and the view from the window. Definitely a nice little coffee shop on the corner”. I myself had two different drinks just to test, including the dark coffee of the day, and the other editor, Sam Hoefler, had a Cappuccino and a Scotcheroo.

It seemed to be a lively area as it is a quality coffee shop on a busy street. For most of the time that we were there, the entire shop was pretty well packed. It is definitely a good place to go to do homework or have a little coffee meeting with some friends.

Brewed Awakenings is located at 1271 1st Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, and its hours are 6:30-6:30 every weekday, 8:00-5:00 on Saturday, and are closed on Sundays. They have free parking in the back for their customers, all you have to do is take the alley in the back and follow the signs to get to it.
