“The Mothers” by Brit Bennett is a debut novel about mothers coming from all walks of life.

Published in October of 2016, Bennett creates a story that can be relevant to people from all walks of life. The novel was written while Bennett was at the same age as one of the novel’s main characters, Nadia Turner.

The title “The Mothers” refers to a group of older women who hold very strong opinions on different aspects of life as well as partake in gossip about others at the church they attend.

The ladies’ main topic of gossip is 17-year-old Nadia Turner. Known as a very intelligent and attractive young woman, Nadia has turned unruly after the suicide passing of her mother, often staying out late at night to party and spend time with boys.

When she gets involved with the pastor’s son, Luke Sheppard, things begin to take a turn for the worst.

Just as Nadia has been accepted into the University of Michigan and is beyond enthused to leave the town she has grown up in, she discovers she is pregnant.

Nadia does not want to continue to be stuck with her ex-Marine father, still struck with grief after her mother’s death and must make a decision regarding the pregnancy that will impact the rest of her life.

Luke claims to be supportive, but does not pull through in the end, leaving Nadia feeling very alone.

Bennett’s novel can appeal to those from all backgrounds and is not simply just for mothers. Her writing allows readers to think about the bigger picture of what sacrifices mothers may make for their children, as well as themselves.

Her novel truly takes an in-depth look at the problems mothers may face on a regular basis, also touching on the impact of racial issues in the United States as well.

Currently rated 3.9 out of 5 stars on, Bennett’s novel has the potential to impact the life of anyone who reads it and will be relevant for years to come.
