Over the course of the past decade, the Kirkwood Community College softball program has experienced a great deal of success under the direction of Head Coach Joe Yegge.

In nine seasons, Yegge has amassed a record of 375-87, which includes six ICCAC regular season championships, three Regional Championships, three District Championships and three National Tournament placings.

Last season, the Eagles placed fifth at the National Tournament. However, coming into this season, the Eagles find themselves sitting at fourth in national polling and number one in the state.

With all of that national exposure, the Eagles feel as though they have developed a target on their back. Yegge said, “We talk about it everyday with the girls ... they signed up for it, that’s what they came here for.”

This is also acknowledged by standout sophomore Morgan Frost, who plays outfielder and pitcher for the Eagles. She said, “There’s definitely a target on our back.… we go anywhere and people want to beat us.”

After a hot start to open the season, there is still a lot left to be done for the Eagles, as Yegge acknowledged his team’s youthfulness and lack of experience and realizes that improvements on the defensive side of the ball will need to be made as the season continues to progress.

However, even with all of the tradition and expectations that surrounds the program, this team has chosen to embrace the pressure rather than shy away from it.

Frost said, “The reason we came here to play softball for a championship program.”

She added, “The sky is pretty much the limit.”

With Yegge at the helm and three All-Americans in the lineup, Taylor Nearad, Maddie Hansen and Morgan Frost, the Eagles are poised to make yet another run at a National Championship.
