Student Life’s fourth annual Toilet Paper Drive is currently underway at Kirkwood Community College. During the collection in 2016, more than 2,100 rolls were donated from college clubs and organizations to Camp Courageous.

According to the website for the non-profit camp, “Camp Courageous is a year-round respite care and recreational facility for individuals of all ages with disabilities.”

Associate Director of Student Life and Housing Seth Vander Tuig said, “After a group volunteered at Camp Courageous, the idea came up [of collecting toilet paper] and the student leaders we had at the time thought it would be something easy for many students to do.”

What began as a group of students trying to do something for a good cause quickly became a yearly competition between clubs and organizations to collect the most toilet paper.

The club or organization that collects the most toilet paper by the deadline of April 14 receives a traveling trophy.

The winning organization in 2016 was the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). The group has also won the drive each year for the last three years.

Vander Tuig said, “So many groups already volunteer time and raise money that we wanted to do something different that many students could participate in with little effort, time, or cost.”

Vander Tuig said he encourages every group to participate. “For something so simple that makes such a big impact on a local organization, it doesn’t make sense at this point not to do it,” Vander Tuig added.

Toilet paper rolls can be dropped off to Student Life in Iowa Hall 230. For questions about the drive, contact Student Life at (319)398-5578. The Student Life office is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
