Joe Earle is a business management major at Kirkwood Community College’s Benton County Center in Vinton and was named as one of this year’s Outstanding Students.

Earle said he takes great pride in his studies. “Being named an Outstanding Student makes me feel that my hard work and studying was all worth it,” said Earle.

He said he enjoys the different locations Kirkwood has, as well as the friendly, helpful staff and wide variety of classes that are offered. He added that his favorite class so far has been Macroeconomics, as he had both a great instructor and classmates.

Earle’s fondest memories of Kirkwood so far include the friendly staff that greets him as he walks in the door each day.

Outside of school, Earle said he enjoys golfing during the summer, bowling during winter and watching movies as his main hobbies.

Earle’s other main passion is his country, serving as a Marine from 2001 - 2005.

Looking back on his experiences, Earle said he sincerely loved most of his time as a Marine. He was in infantry and a two-time combat veteran.

Earle said he took two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. The Marine Corps took him to many countries including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Kuwait, Spain, Turkey and Germany among several others.

Earle added that he believes becoming a Marine and experiencing so many different countries allowed him to truly change his life for the better.

However, he said his greatest accomplishment so far is becoming a dad.

“Just spending time with my wife and daughter together is a blast. Seeing them smile warms my soul,” said Earle. He went on to say that his family has been his greatest influence.

Although he is unsure of his exact plans after Kirkwood, Earle said he will either find a job or move on to a four-year university.
