Outstanding Student Kaley Law, who grew up in Cedar Rapids and is majoring in Exercise Science, said she was excited and honored to be chosen for this award.

Law plans to pursue a career as a personal trainer. She said health and fitness are her passion and she likes helping people take care of themselves.

“Seeing people hit their goals is the best,” said Law.

She also mentioned that she feels it’s important for people to take good care of their bodies.

Her current career plans include becoming a certified personal trainer at The Midwest Athletic Club, often referred to as “The M.A.C.” in Cedar Rapids.

Law mentioned she has to pass a certification test in order to achieve this goal and she will be taking this test sometime before she graduates.

Law said during her time at Kirkwood she appreciated the accommodations she has received as a non-traditional student. She also said that she enjoyed being able to have a flexible class schedule and values the opportunity of having an internship and getting real world experience in her field of study.

Law mentioned that one experience she particularly enjoyed at Kirkwood was getting to administer and participate in VO2 Max Testing. She explained that the testing procedure requires participants to exert maximal effort by running until they can no longer do so.

Law stated that the goal of the testing is to determine how much oxygen someone can utilize during intense exercise. She said participating in the test was challenging but it was a rewarding experience that was fun to do with her classmates.

As the youngest of three siblings, Law said her family has been one of her greatest influences.

She expressed that her family means a lot to her and has provided valued support especially through her decision to change career paths from social work to being a certified personal trainer.
