Through Kirkwood's Study Abroad Program, students are able to further their education and experience new cultures while traveling internationally.

“I think if we’re not connecting with the locals, we’re not really meeting our objective,” said Kirkwood Study Abroad Advisor Ken Nesbett.

Nesbett said the college offers study abroad opportunities to various countries each year.

“Every summer we unveil the plan for the following year …  over the last few years we have averaged about 15 countries that are available per year,” Nesbett said.

Last year, Kirkwood student Amanda Enos took part in a study abroad program to Singapore for her major in media. Enos said prior to the trip she and the other students met together several times.

“We had pre-departure meetings at least once a month with our advisor, Dr. Jessica Westin. At those meetings we would discuss public transportation, how to pack, what you should bring in your carry on and what not to bring in your carry on and how to mentally prepare ourselves for leaving Cedar Rapids,” she said.

Enos added, “I was super excited and at the same time I was incredibly nervous. Altogether, there were probably about 22 of us.”

Nesbett said students may choose either a short-term program or a longer program. The short-term programs typically range from two to four weeks and the longer programs are about four months in length.

Students interested in learning more about study abroad programs can call the International Programs office at 319-398-4492 or stop by the office located at 1154 Linn Hall.
