Kirkwood Community College continues to surprise in its variety of extracurricular activities. On Sept 5 and 6, a Musical Audition for, “City of Angels” took place in the Art/Theatre Annex. The musical pays tribute with the costumes and technical designs to a bygone era of the 1940s and will debut Nov 2-5 in Ballantyne Auditorium.

Participating in the extracurriculars can help students follow passions, form friendships, learn new skills, network professionally and of course be a source of enjoyment. Keeping this in mind and wanting to develop these aptitudes through communication and social awareness, Shelly Ford, Assistant Professor of Theatre supervises some theatric sceneries in the college, including for “City of Angels.”

For the “City of Angels” audition, actors and singers had to prepare a one-minute monologue from any play or musical and one required song. This was a free audition open to all students.

Master electricians are needed for the week of Oct 9, props crew and scene-shift crew members are needed for the week of Oct 16 and Wardrobe crew members will be needed for the week of Oct 23. Ford said, “It is always a good idea to get to learn new materials.”

Ford mentioned, “This is in an attractive event that any classmate can do.” She desires to Increase the number of active actors but also the public attendance. She invites people to, “Come out to see the show.”

The show originally opened on Broadway in 1989 and won a Tony Award for Best Musical in 1990. In the same year, a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and an Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Play were added to the list of accomplishments. Rick Anderson and Dr. Fred Kiser will be directing the Fall musical at Kirkwood and will be able to add, “City of Angels” to their own growing list of successful performances.
