Learning Services Center is a place that helps students with disabilities get the help they need to succeed. They make accommodations for students with everything from ADHD to Dyslexia. Students who need extended time on tests or a quieter testing environment can get what they need at the center, located in 2063 Cedar Hall.

The process to setting up accommodations has a few steps. First, Fill out an application either online or on paper at the Learning Services Center in Cedar Hall. Next, provide documentation from a medical provider. After that, Learning Services will assign a case manager who will help set up the accommodations that needed. “If you have all the documentation, we usually can have a case manager assigned within 24 hours during the school year,” said Arron Wings, Dean of Learning Services. “In the summer, it could take 7-10 days,” he added.

Around 500 students use the Learning Services every year. The office offers a large range of help to those who need it. They can get a sign language interpreter for the hearing impaired or have modifications made to desks or chairs for students in wheel chairs. They have a text reading program for the blind and if a student has trouble with note taking, they can have the notes recorded for them.

Kirkwood also has an Assistive Technology Lab at 2025 Cedar Hall. They offer Large print

keyboards and magnifying devices. They also have software that allows students to talk to the computer rather than typing.

If accommodations were previously set up in high school, IEP plans can be transferred and updated. Wings added, “I would absolutely encourage students who believe they may need accommodations to set them up.”

Wings said that students aren’t forced to use the accommodations once they set them up, however, “Oftentimes students who had accommodations in high school decide that they want to do things on their own in college and then find themselves struggling in school.” Wings does encourage getting the accommodations set up so that even if they aren’t needed, they are available to the student.
