On June 19, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced that Congress had passed the restoration of Year-Round Pell Grants.

This will be beneficial for some students at Kirkwood Community College and others around the nation. Now, in addition to the money available from Pell Grants, college students may receive up to 150 percent more money in Pell Grants to pay for summer classes.

However, there are some requirements to be eligible. One is that the student must be enrolled in five or more credit hours during the summer term and already be receiving Federal Pell Grant money.

Another requirement is that students need to have their FAFSA filled out and submitted to Kirkwood and be registered as a fulltime student for the Fall and Spring terms.

With these few requirements met, students are eligible for the Year-Round Pell Grant.

Bridget Dusek, Financial Aid advisor at the Kirkwood One- Stop Office said, “I think it is exciting that Congress has passed the restoration of the Year-Round Pell Grant because now more aid is available for students in the summer.”

Kirkwood students who are eligible for the Year-Round Pell Grant will receive those awards in the spring.

Bryan Anderson, advanced engineering and robotic technologies student said he appreciates the change. “I think this is a great opportunity for me since I had to leave a full-time job to go back to college, and still take care of my kids,” said Anderson.

In addition to the Year-Round Pell Grant, Kirkwood has released the 2018/2019 scholarship application, which will remain open until March 15, 2018.

Scholarships help students pay for tuition and school materials for the upcoming school year.

According to Dusek, Kirkwood had about 3,000 students apply for the scholarships and approximately 48 percent of the applicants received some form of Financial Aid.

In total, Kirkwood awarded $3 million to students for the 2017/2018 school year.

Students interested in applying for scholarships can logon to the college’s website at www. kirkwood.edu/scholarships. Ac- cording to the site, the 2018-2019 online scholarship application opened Oct. 1 for first-round applications. The first round deadline to apply is March 15, 2018.

Students who have questions about both Financial Aid and the Year-Round Pell Grants should contact the One Stop Office at 319-398-7600 or stop in during regular business hours, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.
