Library offers more than books and research materials

The library at Kirkwood Community College is more than a quiet place where students can study and do research for their classes.

Students can also receive help from librarians for research techniques, properly citing sources, and general computer issues. “We help students with anything they may need, even non-academics, such as directions to the bus stop,” said Digital Services Librarian Ryan Strempke-Durgin. The Library has a number of computers that students can make use of for papers and research. The computers fill up fast at peak hours, though. “We do a lot of printing, scanning, copying and faxing,” Strempke-Durgin added. There is a small section of popular fiction novels on the first floor but most of the material in the library is non-fiction. The second floor is designed to be a quiet area. “It’s rare to have to remind students to be quiet, most of the time, people behave themselves,” said Strempke-Durgin.

The top floor has group study rooms that can be reserved for study groups or club activities. To reserve a room, students should go the library website www. and click “group room reservations.”

Strempke-Durgin said, “The rooms aren’t soundproof but normal talking tones are fine.”

Aside from the reserved rooms, the upper floor is whisper or silence only, allowing students to concentrate on their studies or reading.

Strempke-Durgin said the library receives a lot of traffic. “On an average weekday, more than 500 students come and go from the library. On the weekend it’s a lot slower, perhaps 50 or 60 in a day,” he said.

Strempke-Durgin said he encourages students to come to the library for help. “What I love most about my job is being able to help students,” he said.
