Study habits for students ahead of finals

With the end of the fall semester in sight, finals are looming closer and closer for Kirkwood Community College students.

With all final tests and papers comes studying and a lot of it. While it’s not a popular activity for most students, there are many ways to learn the materials that are necessary to be retained.

“I think I should get something straight, I’m honestly not that great of a studier,” said Christian Malcolm, Liberal Arts. “When I do study though I typically start studying a week before the test and I take online quizzes of the material or I’ll just talk to someone about what I know. If a topic still doesn’t make sense enough to them, then I know I need to go back and rework and study a bit harder on that topic.”

There are many resources available for students. Oftentimes instructors will review in class, hand out a study guide or post one on Talon. The Internet also has an abundance of games and digital flash cards available.

Havika Lee, Liberal Arts, said, “I like using flashcards and rewriting my notes when studying. Those tend to help me memorize the most important information. The importance of studying is that it’s more about testing what you really have learned from the class. By studying over and over the information will stick in your head more and make it easy to remember.”

Getting together with other students to review course material is another way to exchange known information and find out what still needs work.

Students may also choose to  find a place where they can get work done and retain the information they need to know, whether it be at home, at the library, at a friend’s house or at a coffee shop.

“I like anywhere it’s quiet and I can listen to classical music. So a coffee shop or in the library is the perfect place for a person like me,” said Malcolm.

Studying can make or break a final grade for a class. For many students, without dedicating time and hard work into preparing for final tests or term papers, it might be hard to get the desired ‘A’ grade.

“Honestly, studying is so important. It helps us learn the material so we can get it on paper when the test begins. And, who knows? Maybe the stuff you learned in a science class will help you out someday in the future,” said Malcolm.
