Kirkwood Community College hosted its second annual Dance Marathon on Saturday, Feb. 16, setting a new record by raising more than $13,000 for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital to support children who suffer from life-threatening illnesses.

“Dance Marathon is important because it brings college students together who come from all different backgrounds, career interests and friend groups for an incredible cause,” said Shelby Crist, who spearheads Kirkwood’s involvement in Dance Marathon and is the Student Life event and housing coordinator.

“The coolest thing about Dance Marathon is that 100% of the funds raised go toward the children and their families who are utilizing the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital,” she added. “The funds raised do not go toward doctors’ salaries, building expenses, and other related costs.”

Other colleges in Iowa also hosted events to support the children’s hospital. The University of Iowa hosted its annual Dance Marathon earlier in February, raising more than $3 million.

“Dance Marathon isn’t all about dancing as the name is a little deceiving. It’s about raising money for your local children’s hospital. Here in Iowa several Dance Marathon programs heavily support the children’s hospital in Iowa City,” said Crist.

She added, “There are 300 collegiate Dance Marathon programs across the entire nation and just a couple of those are held by community colleges. We are proud to say we are one of those few community colleges who are fortunate to have a supportive enough college and student body to host our own event each year.”

Kirkwood students who missed this year’s event but are interested in participating next year can visit Planning for the event begins in September.

“Getting involved in Dance Marathon is giving back to children who may not have the life we have. It’s all about putting your personal needs aside to do something for those who are less fortunate than many of us are,” said Crist.

“This is an awesome opportunity for any student but especially those who are interested in going into the health field or have any interest in working with children.”
