According to, in 2016 70% of college graduates left school owing money. To help offset this statistic, Kirkwood Community College gives away more than $3 million in scholarships each year and the first deadline for applications is March 15.

Kirkwood Scholarships

According to Scholarship and Alumni Officer Jody Donaldson, “Students only need to complete one online application to be considered for the 325 scholarship funds we have available.”

She added that scholarship award amounts range from $500 to full tuition.

Most questions on the scholarship application are simple “yes” or “no”. If students answer “yes” for a question they have the opportunity to provide details. Concluding the application, there is one essay. The essay asks for the following:

• Students education and career goals.

• Challenges to overcome in aching the goal and have overcome.

• Why the student believes he or she deserves a scholarship.

• Must be 300 words or less.

Upon completion of the application, student submissions will be reviewed for possible scholarships, according to Donaldson.

As stated on the Kirkwood website, “All Kirkwood application materials must be submitted to the Scholarship office via electronic application by March 15 in order to be considered for first-round funding opportunities. Applications received after the deadline will be eligible for a limited amount of second-round funding opportunities and new scholarships developed after the March 15 deadline. Applications for second-round opportunities are due July 15.”

Federal Pell Grants

FASFA does not need to be completed for scholarship eligibility. However, FASFA is required to receive Federal Pell Grants.

On June 19, 2017, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced that Congress had passed the restoration of year-round Pell grants will be available. This could provide students with up to 150 percent more money in Pell grants to pay for summer classes.

However, there are eligibility requirements. Some of the eligibility requirements are as follows:

• A student must be registered as a full-time student for full time during the Fall and Spring terms.

• Student must be enrolled for five or more credit hours during the summer term,

 • A student must already be receiving federal Pell grant money.

• Student must have their FASFA filled out and submitted to their prospective college.

Other Scholarships

In addition to grants and Kirkwood scholarships, students can also apply for the Marion American Legion Post #298 Educational Trust Scholarship and the Purple Heart Scholarship.

The Marion American Legion Post #298 Educational Trust Scholarship is open to the families of veterans. To be eligible one must live in Linn County.

The applications can be picked up in the veteran’s affairs office located in Kirkwood Hall.

The Purple Heart Scholarship honors and supports those who earned this prestigious award, or their spouses and children.

Recipients of this award are provided tuition and books for their entire two-year program at Kirkwood.
