Award winning Iowa-native Blues musician B.F. Burt made a return to Kirkwood Community College’s main campus on Feb. 22.

Burt, who has performed multiple times at Kirkwood is deemed a college favorite. According to Nicoleta Nica, nursing faculty, “I first saw Burt in 2008 at the Iowa City Public Library for a children’s program. What caught my eye is that he is comfortable singing for any age group and has a passion for Blues.

Since then he is a guest to many events in the Iowa City area.”  She added, “My family and I see him every summer at the Barbeque and Blues in North Liberty and again, he is amazing. I probably saw him around town at different events at least 8 to 10 times, and it was a pleasure to see him perform here on campus.”

Not only has he performed in Iowa Hall many times, he was also a KCCK radio 88.3 on air personality.  Burt’s blues style twist that he puts on songs of his own and others seemed to capture the audience in the cafeteria of Iowa Hall. Of the many songs he performed the one that brought the volume of the crowed down to a hush was his performance of “What a Wonderful World.” At the event, Burt said, “I have had this song floating around in my head for the last few days and I think it’s needed. If you think you need it then it’s appropriate at this time.”

According to their website, The Blues Foundation’s 34th annual International Blues Challenge Awards ceremony, which took place at Memphis’ historic Orpheum Theatre on Jan. 20. Burt was the big man of the evening as the bluesman representing the Central Iowa Blues Society, picking up three awards: First Place Solo/Duo, Best Solo/Duo Guitarist and the Lee Oskar Award for Best Harmonica Player.

Not only is Burt an award-winning musician but he also loves to volunteer his time to help others. A 2016 article published in City Revealed stated, “Burt is involved in many ways.” In the article, Burt was quoted as saying, “One of the most gratifying is at the University of Iowa hospitals, hearing that what turned the corner for them was hearing my voice. I’m a part of that moment that gives them strength to move forward,” summing it all up with “By and large, I take the gig because it feels right, and I support it.”
