'Ready Player One' creates many worlds of imagination

Many students are aware the movie “Ready Player One” hits theaters March 29. However, few may not have realized the book is already out. The book “Ready Player One” was written by Ernest Cline in 2011. In his book, Cline did a fantastic job with details that draw the reader in from character development to many 80’s references.

Typically, with books, the main story takes places in two or three different settings (with exceptions such as Star Wars or the Lord of the Rings). This is not the case with Ready Player One. Instead, Cline takes one’s imagination to a new level and introduces countless worlds for the reader to visualize.

May it be the arcade, the world within Dungeons and Dragons, or the Star Wars universe, Cline puts the right amount of detail to make it seem real and gives more than enough detail to let the reader picture how the world within the book looks.

The visual aid is topped by the development of the characters. While all characters develop throughout the book, none of them develop as much as the main character Wade Watts, AKA Percival.

Wade, in the beginning, seems like the average high school nerd. However, this changes as the story progresses. His character goes from being a heavy-set nerd to a fit computer genius in just a few chapters. However, his physical appearance is not the only thing that changes- this personality does, too. He exhibits kindness, obsession, love, hate and many more emotions that help the reader develop a connection to Wade.

To say there are many 80’s references is a bit of an understatement. There is a minimum of one 80’s reference in every chapter. Whether it is a movie, book or song, Cline does an amazing job bringing the nostalgia of the 80’s in to his book. However, Cline made it so that the number of references all have meaning to the plot rather than creating one huge headache.

May it be the meticulous details, the characters or the 80’s references, the book “Ready Player One” is an instant classic and could easily become the next “Hunger Games” or “Ender’s Game”.

Steven Spielberg is going to have a hard time making the movie as great as the book. However, with the development of CGI and Spielberg’s skills “Ready Player One” is ready to win awards.
