Library breaks down Credo reference

By Kate Hess

Maybe librarians are the only ones who get excited about encyclopedias, but I think there is a lot for anyone to get excited about in the library’s online database, Credo Reference. See what you think.

What is it?

Credo bills itself as a place to get background information for your research, and with over 3.5 million quality articles on a variety of academic topics, you can truly start any research project here.

Why should I use it? Have you ever had to research a topic you don’t know much about? Do you run across terms in your textbook that you have trouble understanding? We often need a simple, straightforward summary of a topic to give us a little context for something we’ve heard about, read about, or need to study. Credo is the perfect place to go.

What can I find there?

Credo is full of reference articles, so you’ll find articles that give you an overview or summary of a topic. But it also has lots of added features to help you make connections between topics, and extend your search beyond Credo. Many different topics are covered too -- for example, I can find a half page article that gives a thorough botanical explanation of chlorophyll and how it’s produced, as well as an article summarizing its chemical properties and derivation.

To follow a different track, I can search “Bollywood” and find a one-page summary of the Hindi language films, complete with a list of further readings to expand on the background information given. From there I can click on a mind map (see image) that links the term Bollywood to several related terms, each with their own encyclopedia article just a click away. Or instead I might decide to click on a video movie review, or follow a link to an article in another library database that gives a critical analysis of gender in Bollywood films. So Credo is not simply a place to start your research, but a launch pad for continued research in collections of reliable resources.

How can I get there?

Access Credo through the Library website (, and click on “All Kirkwood Databases”. From there, search “Credo” or scroll down to the C’s. If you’re off campus or using your own device, just enter your k number and password to get access to a whole library’s worth of encyclopedias at your fingertips.
