With the end of the semester quickly approaching student stress is at an all-time high. Dealing with this stress can be complicated, however there is a simple answer. Pick up a hobby. Studies show that having a hobby can reduce stress. There are many inexpensive hobbies a person can do including these five hobbies under $5.

Collecting is perhaps one of the biggest hobbies of all time. Anything can be collected ranging in all shapes in sizes from coins to cars. Two of the most popular collector items are stamps and cards. Stamps currently cost 50 cents and cards average between $1 to $5 for a standard trading card game pack.

Coloring and Drawing

Drawing is inexpensive with paper costing about $1 and a package of coloring utensils costing the same. Coloring is not only a way to pass time but it also has health benefits. According to the Cleveland Clinic, coloring helps people relax because it takes attention away from themselves and onto present-moment events.

Working out and going to a gym are both healthy hobbies. They are not only physically healthy but when done with friends it can help build social skills. Going to a gym often requires a membership, which can be costly. But, Kirkwood provides the Rec Center free of charge to those with a current EagleCard.

Another group hobby is going to the movies once every few weeks with friends. This hobby can be expensive and break the $5 limit with the ticket price alone. However, the Collins Road Theater offers a $4 Tuesday movie deal where all movies are $4 and a small popcorn is $1.

Kirkwood Clubs and Activities

In terms of hobbies that have a more social aspect, joining a club and or organization on campus is another options. Kirkwood offers more than 80 different student clubs and organizations as well as many sports. Fifteen clubs are located at the Iowa City campus while the remainder are on the main campus in Cedar Rapids.

Associate Director of Student Life Seth Vander Tuig said, “It’s a great opportunity for resume building, friends, fun and for students to make most out of their education.” He added, “Students in clubs tend to have a higher GPA and graduation rates.” For a full list of the different clubs go to
