Spring weather is finally here to stay and with it comes the reminder that students, faculty and staff at Kirkwood Community College are rapidly winding down the 2017-2018 school year.

With spring finals just a few short weeks away, some students will prepare to return for summer classes or take a break then start up for another year in the fall while others have reached the end of their journey and will be graduating in a matter of days.

For one student who will be saying goodbye to college life in May, a reflection of her time at Kirkwood as well as what is to come next is part of the rite of passage that is graduation and something that she will share with all members of the class of 2018.

“I had a major job loss, which encouraged me to give it another go at school,” said second year veterinary technician student Rhiannon Vice.

“I had previously attended Kirkwood, so I was familiar with the resources, reputation and support this college, and especially my program, are proudly known for,” she continued.

When asked how she is different now than when she first came to campus in May 2016, Vice laughed as she said, “My stress level is through the roof but to be honest, it’s worth it for the skills and knowledge I have gained as well as the self-growth I have experienced.”

The veterinary technician program is one of the more aggressive and challenging programs offered at Kirkwood.

An entrance exam must be passed before acceptance and there are limited students accepted each year, which is also somewhat unique to this course of study.

Graduates receive an Associate of Science degree upon completion of the program and an opportunity to be take the national board exam known as the VTNE, as well as any state exams that are relevant to where they will practice.

“My advice for any student of Kirkwood, especially those entering the veterinary profession, is batten down the hatches because it is going to get bumpy but get excited about what you are doing, no matter what it is - only you can make the most of this experience,” Vice said.

“I know a piece of me will be happy when I see campus in my rearview mirror that final time but I am going into a field that I love and where I am going to make a difference, so it will be bittersweet,” Vice added.
