It’s safe to say that staying focused on school during the summer can be somewhat of a challenge, especially after the long winter experienced this year.

Sunshine, nice weather, BBQs, trips to the beach and music festivals are just some of the distractions that college students face over the summer months.

While it is necessary for students have a break so they can enjoy the weather and partake in leisurely summer activities, it’s also important to not lose track of one’s higher education goals.

For some, enrolling in summer classes is a tool to make it easier to stay focused.

However, those students who go back home for the summer often choose to work over the break in an effort to save money for the fall term when opportunities are fewer due to academic obligations.

Non-traditional students often have additional responsibilities. Taking care of families, households and children during the break can leave one hustling at the end of the summer to make sure everything is in place for the new school term.

Thinking and planning ahead is a great way to start on a strong foot and allow for maximum enjoyment during this much needed time of respite.

Get most of the necessary academic arrangements out of the way before summer break begins.

For example, making sure your FAFSA is up to date and deciding on what classes that you will be enrolled in for the fall term can really give a propulsion forward and checks a few major items off of the average student’s to-do list.

For students who live on campus and are going home for the summer, don’t forget to have your housing arrangements and leases ready for when you return in the fall.

No one wants to head back to school from time off with brain lag, so keep your mind muscle strong over the upcoming months.

A few suggestions are to pick out a couple books to read or maybe watch some videos once a week on topics that pertain to your degree, just to help stay focused on working on your educational goals.

Whatever activities you partake in, remember summer break is meant to allow students, faculty and staff time away to refuel and relax so don’t forget to enjoy everything this time of year brings.
