On Aug. 25, Kirkwood Community College welcomed Hypnotist Brian Imbus as a part of Welcome Week festivities. Imbus is one of the most requested hypnotists in the United States with over 200 shows a year and has been a guest on campus since 2007.

Imbus said, “I started in high school when I saw my first show, and I just knew.” Twenty years later he is continuing to do what he loves: providing fun and entertainment to his audiences.

The show began with going over the basics and dismissing worries about what can happen during hypnosis. A person would not do anything they wouldn’t do while awake and it is true that it affects everyone differently, according to Imbus.

While most people do not remember what they do under hypnosis, there are some who do.  Imbus also added that one hour in hypnosis is equal to eight hours of sleep and with that, he began the real show.

Thirty students were randomly picked from the crowd then the lights were dimmed and the process to put them into hypnotic sleep was underway.

Once they are all under, Imbus started to entertain the crowd and it was clear he was having fun. Participants performed a range of behaviors and faced unseen scenarios, such as being on a jet going through a storm, dancing and even a chance to kiss celebrities they always wanted to meet.

The audience was engaged and laughter ensued as they observed their friends and fellow students succumb to the power of hypnosis. On occasion, someone would wake up and Imbus would either put them back under or offer them to go back to their seats.

As the night was coming to an end, the best entertainment is left for last: Imbus asked for ideas from the participants. One person was Justin Timberlake, while another was Imbus’s biggest fan one moment then thought he was a creep the next.

Three others had just won the lottery, only to realize they were off by one minute. It may be hard to believe but all of this was achieved with a keyword or two suited to each person’s own act.

The students were brought out of hypnosis and this concluded the show. When asked if she was satisfied with the performance, criminal justice student Savannah Dean said, “Heck yeah, it’s always good.”

While success did not come for him overnight, Imbus confirmed he has no plans of stopping anytime soon.
