With the weather starting to feel more like fall guests gathered at Kirkwood’s sustainable village for the Garden Lights Fundraiser on Sept. 21. Guests arrived and enjoyed fresh watermelon grown in the garden and popcorn.
After everyone settled next to the campfires, musicians Scott Dix and Christina Farrell entertained the guests.
Kicking off the event was club founder Betsy Borchardt who summarized the history of the club and how the proceeds will be used. “ I started the club to save the sustainable village,” said Borchardt.
The sustainable village was originally built for the construction program to practice sustainable building practices. Borchardt added, “Since the program was not consistently using the village the college was considering having the village destroyed.”
She added that the proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help create a student work-study position to help care for the garden and to help fund workshops about sustainable practices.
After Borchardt spoke, guests listened to Shawn Hawkes, a representative from Iowa Raptor project.
Guests learned about the mission of Iowa Raptor Project and facts about raptors. They got to see a live great horned owl and different artifacts from raptors.
After the raptor presentation concluded, August Stolba, current club president, and a representative from Feed Iowa First informed the guests of the upcoming volunteering opportunities with Feed Iowa First.
To conclude the event, fire dancers from Rekindle and QC Sol Fire performed for guests.
