Naxos Music Library is a different type of library resource

For many students at Kirkwood Community College their introduction to the library’s electronic resources is through class and research assignments. They have spent time with our articles, books,  ebooks, and periodicals in what can feel like a text dominated environment. For students, faculty and staff looking to explore something different Naxos Music Library is worth a look.

Naxos is unique in that it is the only streaming music platform that is provided free through the Kirkwood library. Focusing mostly on classical music, Naxos’ collection includes over 2 million tracks with over 800 new records added every month pulling from premier classical music labels like Deutsche Grammophon or Sony Classical offering music from the medieval era to contemporary compositions.  In addition to the surplus of classical music options available the database also pulls music from other genres from around the world too, and for those interested Kirkwood also subscribes to Naxos’ smaller sister database, Naxos Jazz.

The platforms serves both those who are familiar and those who are new to the world of classical music. Music faculty and students can compare and contrast various performances of specific pieces while those new to the field can use the guided tour options. Both can listen through and explore Naxos’ provided playlists that offer options by genre, instrument and mood. Students also have the option of creating and sharing their own playlist through Naxos.

Naxos Classical and Naxos Jazz can be both be found through the Kirkwood library homepage (www.kirkwood.edu/library) and going to the ‘All Kirkwood Databases’ link to the right of the rotating display. Once there you can find any Kirkwood database alphabetically, under ‘N’ you should find Naxos.

Just like other streaming platforms Naxos also provides a mobile app that works on iphone or android. To get the app just search ‘Naxos Music Library’ in the App Store or Google Play. When accessing the database through the library on a desktop  just click ‘mobile app’ and then sign up for an account. You will need to use your Kirkwood email address when signing up, which will also serve as your username. Remember to log out when you are done.

As Always, if you need any help accessing Naxos, the mobile app, making a playlist, or finding a specific piece of music please come ask us at the library.
