That fateful night we summoned the Kirkwood monster

It has been 50 years since that day but it will always be yesterday to me. My friends and I were out late and on our way to my apartment. We laughed and joked about the night we just had when out of nowhere my friend Joseph stopped.

We all asked what he was doing but it took a solid five minutes for him to say anything. When he did it was not what we were expecting. He asked when they built a new magic trick shop.

It was then that we realized what he was talking about. In a lot that had been vacant for years stood a new building with a sign that said Hallow Night Magic Shop open now.

Without thinking I said, “Let’s go in and see what they have.” It was as we approached the store that I heard it. Knock...knock...knock...

I figured it was just a gimmick because the doors opened right after. The store had Halloween yard decorations and costumes everywhere. We browsed through a couple of aisles until we stumbled to aisle 13 and I heard it again. Knock...knock...knock...

We found spell books, talismans and summoning supplies. I found an old rosary supposedly blessed by a group of monks. Joseph found a Ouija board and convinced us it would be a good joke to try summoning a ghost.

We went to the check out where we were met by the store owner when I heard it again. Knock…knock…knock...

I asked what that sound was and the owner said he had no idea what I was talking about but as we left, he had a devilish smile and I could have sworn I saw horns.

We decided to go to the Kirkwood campus, so we could be under the moon when casting our spell.  We went behind Jones Hall and picked a spell that we found online.

The spell told us to hold hands around a Ouija and say “egressus meo rege tradita pretium” three times and the summons would work. We all stood around holding hands and started to say it.

The wind picked up and all went silent. I could hear a howl in the distance. Then we heard it. Knock..knock...knock...

I felt was something wet hitting my face. I raised my hand to wipe it off but then I saw Joseph hit the ground head rolling away from his body. I heard my friends scream.  two of my friends Tim and Matthew yelled, get the others out of here as they jumped the figure.

I grabbed the others and made a v line to my truck parked behind Johnson hall. However, we were too slow. Somehow it had got passed us and it was at my truck waiting. we made a sharp turn towards the blue light hoping to get help. As we approached, we saw an old lady wearing a hood eating something. It was not until we were next to her that we saw what she was eating, and we realized we walked into a trap. The lady was eating the arm of one of my friends. I heard my friend Jane say oh my God before puking. Suddenly the lady started jerking around and I got the first good look at the monster we had summoned.

I saw its disfigured face with strips of rotten flesh torn apart and pulled up revealing bone. I saw the hollowed eye socket and felt its murders content coldly calculating how it should torture us before killing us off. In a raspy voice I heard it say, “knock... knock... knock...”

I knew there was nothing I could do, and my muscles went limp. And I fell to my knees and asked for a savior. A piercing light appeared out of the rosary I had bought and covered me and the two friends I had holding my hands. the monster cried in pain and leapt at us. I closed my eyes and started to lose conscious. But before I finally went under, I saw three sets of wings. One as white as tainted mountain snow. Another as black as a starless night, and lastly one pure light surrounding us.

I mustered the strength to say thank you and passed out. It was three weeks later that I awoke finding myself in the hospital handcuffed to the bed. The doctors came in and checked on me before allowing the police to enter. They questioned me about what had happened. I told them the story and found out that no one other than Jane and Isabelle, the two I was holding, survived. They did not believe us and told us there was no magic shop. However, because all our stories matched and after forensic analysis, we were set free.

Since then Isabelle and I had gotten married and had kids of our own. Jane had dropped out of college and joined a nunnery. We all have tried to put this behind us, but every October we know something is watching us. I know it’s still after us. it hides in the shadows waiting until the perfect time arrives. Knock... Knock… knock...
