New updates coming to Pokémon GO

In the summer of 2016, Pokémon GO was first released. Riding on the coattails of the original Nintendo portable console games, Pokémon GO became an instant hit.

Although its popularity has significantly dropped since then, the game and its community has remained active.

This community has many members around the country, including Kirkwood Community College students and staff.

On campus, there are seven Pokémon gyms and several more pokéstops. As students walk between classes, Pokémon GO is one way to engage in entertainment between buildings.

Student Daxton Traut said he most often visits the pokéstops in Nielsen Hall, as there are three surrounding the building and a Pokémon gym on the third floor. He said his most memorable experience was getting his first legendary Pokémon in a raid.

The Pokémon community is vast. Former student William Crary said the community is “very eclectic. I’ve seen kids playing and then I’ve seen sixty-year-olds playing.”

On Facebook, there are two main groups for the Pokémon GO community in Cedar Rapids, “Official Pokémon-Go Cedar Rapids” and “Pokémon Go Cedar Rapids (Official).” Crary also said that the Facebook groups have been a great way to connect with people.

Outside of the community, there has also been some recent events in the game itself. On Saturday, Sept. 22, Pokémon GO had its usual monthly Community Day where one rare species was more likely to appear than usual.

That day, it was Chikorita and their evolutions. However, there was an unusual Pokémon that appeared as well. It was made of silver liquid and its head was shaped like a gold fastener nut.

After catching the Pokémon, the player would see a Ditto (a Pokémon that can transform to look like other Pokémon) in their inventory rather than the unfamiliar Pokémon.

It was later announced that Dittos were masquerading as the new Pokémon named Meltan. Meltan will be available to players in Pokémon GO and the new Nintendo Switch games later this year.

The new Nintendo Switch games Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! will be available on Nov. 16.

The games return to the Kanto region that features Professor Oak, gym leaders such as Brock and Misty and the nefarious schemes of Team Rocket. The Let’s Go games are particularly inspired by Pokémon Yellow Version where the player could be followed by their faithful Pikachu in a similar fashion to Ash Ketchum from the Pokémon anime.

In these games, the gameplay of the former portable console games is combined with the gameplay from the Pokémon GO app.

Encounters with wild Pokémon will be similar to Pokémon GO and there will be the usual story content that has been in their previous games. Visit pokemonletsgo.pokemon.com to see more details.
