Local Artwork on display in Iowa Hall Gallery

As the colors of fall start to fade on campus, the colors in the paintings, ceramic pieces, and multimedia pieces in Iowa Hall Gallery seem a little more vibrant. This past exhibition showcased the work of local artists in the Cedar Rapids area. These artists included: Dean Dunkel, Nancy Lindsay, Marty Mitchell, Robert Fox, Thomas Newport, Elizabeth Rhodes-Read, and Lou Wendel. Exhibits ranged from ceramics to photographs, multi-medium sculptures to classic landscape oil paintings.

Each artist showcased their creative brilliance in each piece that was displayed in the gallery. Nancy Lindsay, the oil painter, said that the texture in her paintings varied by the different tools that she used when creating it. When looking closely at her work almost all of her pictures had a hue of coral either as an undertone or the color was directly used in the picture its self. When asked about this color choice she said that she normally primes her canvases with a vibrant pink. This creates a warm pink undertone in her paintings.

Across the gallery, photographer Robert Fox’s black and white images deeply contrasted Lindsay’s colorful landscape paintings. Fox started his career working as a professional photographer in the 70s and to this day still uses a film box camera. “My camera is an Argus 75, which is what all of [ my pictures]in this exhibition were shot with.” Each one of his images has interesting textural elements and angles which draw your eye around the picture. Fox added, “I personally don’t have a goal when taking a picture anymore.” He just clicks the shutter. After years of working professionally and editing his own photos, he has learned what elements make up a good photo. “I may shoot a roll and have 12 that I like.”

Adaption and experience are the names of the game when it comes to art.  All the artists showcased in the exhibition have adapted their techniques throughout the yearsMarty Mitchell, an oil pastel artist summed up this point beautifully by stating, “I always learn something new (laughs) even after all of these years.”
