Online winter classes provide accelerated pace

Students at Kirkwood Community College have the opportunity to take a six-week course over winter break through the Distance Learning Department.

Winter courses are Dec. 17 to Jan. 25.  According to Director of Distance Learning David Hunt, students are allowed to take one winter break course at a time and the classes are limited to about 20 students.

This is in part because of the intensity of the courses, he said. These courses take place for approximately six weeks, whereas regular courses are 16 weeks.

“It’s fast-paced and busy but you’re focused on one course at a time,” said Hunt. “It does move  pretty quickly and you have to have time for the course.”

Registration opens to students at the same time as spring courses and they fill up fast, according to Hunt. He added that the winter break courses count as part of the student’s spring course load.

Veterinary technician student Julie Reyes plans to take a composition class to meet her degree demands. She said she would rather take it over the winter than have classes extend into the summer past her graduation date.

Additional to the numerous winter break courses, there are many new courses offered in the spring semester as well.

During the 2019 spring semester there are five new courses offered online and in-person for students. They include:

  • Information Governance
  • Personal Wellness
  • Real Estate Law
  • Estate Planning/Administration
  • Personal Finance

Distance Learning is located in 2196 Linn Hall. For more information on online classes or winter break courses students can visit or
