Kirkwood Campus Security works to protect students

There are many types of employment at Kirkwood Community College, but only one job that runs 24 hours. The college’s Campus Security team works for students 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Campus Security, while not official police officers, do act as a law enforcement agency on campus.

According to Emergency Services and Campus Security Senior Director Melissa Jensen, the main difference between Campus Security and the Cedar Rapids Police Department is, “Cedar Rapids Police are sworn law enforcement officers, so they carry weapons and they are sworn so they have arrest powers. Campus Security has a lot of educational requirements and a lot of training; however, they do not carry weapons and they do not have arrest powers.”

Campus Security employs several people because they have the task of providing protection and aid to all Kirkwood campuses and Regional Centers.

According to the 2018 Campus Security Report, since 2015 there have been 19 reports of incidents on Kirkwood's main campus involving campus police. Out of these 19 incidents, 10 were liquor law violations. The others included one burglary, one motor vehicle theft, one drug abuse violation, one weapons law violation, two incidents of dating violence, one case of domestic violence, one incident of stalking and one unfounded.

Campus Security acts as the college’s first response team in a medical emergency, as well as a helping hand when students may be locked out of their car, have a dead battery, or need an escort to their vehicle after a night class.

Students are encouraged to call Campus Security at 319-389-1774 if they need help. Jensen said response times vary depending on location and urgency of the call.
