Stopping the flu before it begins

Kirkwood Community College offered seasonal flu shots for free for the first time this year.

The vaccination is one of the most common prevention methods when dealing with the flu but it is not the only one.

Nicole Inches, nursing major, said, “The best ways to prevent illness are routine handwashing and to stay home if you’re sick. If handwashing is not available then Germex is a suitable but is not preferred.”

She added that these are all methods to not only protect you but also your community.

A group of people notably called “Antivaxers” have recently protested vaccinations. When asked about this situation Inches stated, “There is no evidence that currently supports the antivaxing campaign. The previous evidence has since been redacted and the doctor who published the study has lost his license.”

The injection is intramuscular or IM, this means that it is a simple injection into the muscle which only takes a couple seconds. If concern persists knowing the effects of the shot might ease concern. The shot has been known to cause minor soreness to the arm which can be helped with exercise.  The soreness on average goes away within 2-3 days.

The administrators of the shots at Kirkwood were nursing majors and learning to do immunizations is one of the first things that they learn in their classes.

The event’s goal was to prevent illness in the community and their strong belief is that through the vaccine and regular hand washing, illness can and will be prevented.
