‘Elf the Musical’ fills Cedar Rapids with holiday cheer

Laughter, music and comedy gold can all be found in the musical adaptation of the movie Elf being performed live at Theatre Cedar Rapids this holiday season.

“Elf the Musical” stars Kirkwood Community College alumnus DJ Kohl as Buddy, Greg Brown as Walter Hobbs and Emily Palmer as Jovie, Buddy’s love interest.

“Elf the Musical” follows the same basic plot as the movie but also keeps the audience on their toes with the production’s magical twists.

Brown, who plays Walter Hobbs was beyond compare, nailing every aspect of the role that was previously set by James Caan, the original actor of Mr. Hobbs. In addition to Brown’s performance, a hand must be given to all the kids who participated in the musical.

Dylan Asher and Claire Loan’s portrayal of the fighting elf couple who told Buddy he was human was on the same level as would be expected of professional actors.

Kohl, the actor for Buddy, said the group has “been practicing almost every day for two months.” Fortunately, this all paid off in the end and the audience loved the performance.

Kirkwood student David Scanlon, Liberal Arts, an ensemble member in the play, added, “It’s all worth it because when the days are done, we get nights like this. When everything comes together and we get to share everything with the world.”

The cast also includes Kirkwood student Mitchell Grauberger, who performs as part of the ensemble. Ticket information, cast listing and show updates can be found at the Theatre Cedar Rapids website www.theatrecr.org.
