Kirkwood  Community  College  has  many  resources  available  to  its  students  such  as  clubs,  sports,  free  tutoring  and  more.  However,  there  is  one  service  that  not  everyone  may  know  about.  The  Dean  of  Students  office  offers  free  counseling  to  all  Kirkwood  students.

Each person’s interactions and struggles are different but some are willing to speak out. Kirkwood student Jane Jones said, “It has helped me more than I thought I needed and I think anyone and everyone should use it if they need it. The fact that it is free and confidential makes it incredibly easy to use without fear of any backlash.”

She added that her advice to others is, “If you need help, there is no shame in asking and it is one of the strongest things you can do.”

Liberal Arts student Chris Smith commented, “Counseling services has been very helpful for me.  I go in for ongoing services but I’ve also been able to see the walk-in counselors during times of crisis, such as when I was having a panic attack.”

He added, “It’s really convenient having services available on campus. I don’t need to find the time to go somewhere else.”

Counseling  Services  can  be  contacted  by  simply  walking  into  the  Dean  of  Students  office  and  requesting  an  appointment.  It  is  completely  confidential  and  designed  specifically  to  not  affect  a student’s academic  or  career  goals.

According to, “Counseling is your chance to think out loud with an experienced and objective listener who can help you explore your options, offer new ways to cope with situations, provide information about helpful resources or just simply listen.”

Students  in  need  of  services  should contact  the  Dean  of  Student’s  office.  In  case  of  an  emergency  contact  911,  if  it  is  not  an  emergency,  for  Cedar  Rapids  call  319-398-5540 and Iowa  City  call  319-887-3658.
