The Holiday Giving Campaign, sponsored by Student Life, is an opportunity for charity in the community.

Seth Vander Tuig, associate director of Student Life and Housing at Kirkwood Community College, said, “This is our 22nd year here at Kirkwood.  We’ve changed it a few times over the years on which specific organizations we help.”

This fall Kirkwood is supporting two organizations:  The Linn County Child Development Center and the Willis Dady Emergency Shelter. Gifts, no matter the size, are being accepted at Student Life in Iowa Hall.  There are Christmas trees set up around campus, with respective tags for both organizations, representing the campaign.

Vander Tuig also said what the best gift ideas would be for each organization. “For the Linn County Child Development Center, any children’s toys, coats, or hats. The Willis Dady Emergency Shelter, hats and gloves, toiletry items (shampoo and body wash) or gift cards to places like Walmart.”

Each of these organizations has a specific purpose that helps the community. The Linn County Child Development Center’s mission is to provide good quality, daily child development services to families with lower incomes.  They are in need of donations like children’s clothes, toys and winter gear, family kitchen and cookware items, household tools (microwaves, vacuums), bathroom and bedroom items, men’s and women’s clothing and gift cards for groceries.  Also, they are in need of classroom books and art supplies.

The Willis Dady Emergency Shelter provides help for those who are homeless, people at risk of homelessness and helping to rehousing the homeless.  They are in need of adult sized backpacks, men’s sweatpants and sweatshirts (XL & XXL), thermal socks, hats, gloves, men’s t-shirts (L-XXL), children’s hats, gloves, socks, scarves, Walmart gift cards ($10-$20), household items (batteries, broom/dust pan, laundry soap, dish soap, all-purpose cleaners) and toiletries such as shampoo and body wash.

Monetary donations (checks) are also accepted. The Holiday Giving Campaign ends Dec. 7. For more information on the giving campaign log on to www.kirkwood.edu/holidaygiving.
